Due to my backlog and the demand for my work, I only do rewinds for restoration of old broken coils. Rewinding a new functional pickup to get a specific, different tone is guesswork—no one can predict the exact, subtle detail that will result. There is much more to pickup performance than just the way the coil is wound—all materials used have as much effect on the resulting sound as winding does. Rewinding for a performance increase can be an exercise in futility.

If your humbucker is dead most often only one coil is bad—same goes for most multiple coil designs.

If your pickup has been encapsulated it cannot be easily rewound (e.g. a coil immersed in epoxy) it is often not worth bothering with.
